Many of the antibiotics offered are members of the aminoglycoside family whose mechanism of action works by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Antibiotics like Ampicillin or Carbenicillin, however, function by interfering with the final cell-wall synthesis of growing cells. Powders like IPTG (isopropylthiogalactoside) and X-Gal (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-b-D-galactopyranoside) interact in various ways with the lac operon. Broths such as Miller’s LB, S.O.C. Medium, and Terrific are used to maintain and yield growth of E. coli and are also available. The majority of the molecular products come in the form of buffers which vary in pKa and pH. Buffers are essential to media solutions in that they assist in providing an optimal pH for cell proliferation and prevention of apoptosis if used properly.
